A Long Awaited Update

Hi All,
Just a short update to let you know bracken is doing well on her 3 legs. She still has her paralysed one, we still haven't removed and to be honest, she is happy as Larry with.

I will not go over and over old ground, we still take her to the hydrotherapy pool at ARC every other week and will do for as long as she is with us, It keeps her supple.

Below are a few recent pictures of her:

I hope that for all of you who follow this blog, all is well and that you are of good health, Slim, Jaida, Dillon, Sheena, Pat and Mark to name but a few.

Glad to Bracken is doing well! I have a dog, Maddie, that also had radial nerve damage. In December of 2008 she was likely hit by one of those 4 wheel hunting cars like a Kawasaki Mule. I say that because I heard one of them going down the road just before I found her injured. Maddie is a mutt, most likely Basset Hound and German Shepard. She has Basset Hound legs. She injured her right front leg and was completely dragging her leg. She is close to 70 pounds so it was very difficult for her to get around. I remember reading about other dogs with this injury and never found a story about a dog that recovered. I felt I needed to write because Maddie regained use of her leg enough to run! She spent 2 months laying in bed on pain pills and anti inflammatory medicine. I would rub her shoulder and move her leg gently to keep it stretched out. Around the 3 month mark she started regaining use of her leg. Her foot still seems paralyzed but she has learned how to flip her foot out and put it down. She walks with a limp but when she runs you cannot tell she was injured. We live on the Gulf of Mexico and I think swimming helped her more than anything. I am not a vet but I think the initial bed rest helped her greatly. I really just wanted people to know that some dogs do recover from this injury. I am sure it depends on the extent of the damage. I will say that it took a long time to heal and we went through a lot of secondary problems. Maddie went through a long stage of chewing that foot. The vet said a nerves reconnect it causes itching and she is a dog so she chewed it. She had to wear a huge Elizabethan collar for months. She even had to be hospitalized to save her foot and her life. She finally stopped this after she took up swimming. I am happy to report that Maddie is doing great now and no longer chewing her foot. She still has the limp and she lost a lot of muscle and flexibility in that leg, but overall she is doing great! To everybody out there searching for hope about there dog, Maddie is proof that some dogs recover from radial nerve damage. My advice is to have patience.
